Price percent vs ROE percent

A stop "at 20%" can mean two very different things. As a price move, it is 20% away from your entry. As ROE, it means losing 20% of your margin, which at 10x leverage is only a 2% price move. Pick the mode that matches how you think about the trade.

Formula

Price move % = ROE % / Leverage (in ROE mode) Long SL = Entry x (1 - SL move) Long TP = Entry x (1 + TP move) Short SL = Entry x (1 + SL move) Short TP = Entry x (1 - TP move)

Example

Long at 60,000 with 10x leverage, stop at 20% ROE and target at 50% ROE. The stop is a 2% move, at 58,800, and the target is a 5% move, at 63,000. The risk/reward is 1 : 2.5.

Better stops

A fixed percentage is easy, but the best stop is where your trade idea is proven wrong, such as below a support level. Once you know that price, use the position size calculator to size the trade around it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator warn me about liquidation?

If the stop price move is larger than 100% divided by your leverage, the position would be liquidated before the stop is hit.

Which mode does my exchange use?

Most futures exchanges show ROE on positions. Order prices are always real prices, which is what this tool gives you.

Can I set only a stop or only a target?

Yes. Leave the other field empty.

Results are estimates for education only and are not financial advice. Always check the numbers on your exchange before you trade.
