How Bitcoin Mining Profitability Works

Bitcoin mining is a competition. Machines around the world race to find the next block, and the winner earns the block reward plus transaction fees. Whether that race makes money for you depends on a handful of numbers.

1. Your share of the network

Your expected income is your hashrate divided by the total network hashrate, times the coins paid out each day. With about 144 blocks per day, a miner with one millionth of the network hashrate can expect about one millionth of the daily rewards, usually paid through a mining pool.

2. Network hashrate and difficulty

When more machines join, total hashrate rises and every miner's share shrinks. Bitcoin adjusts its difficulty about every two weeks so that blocks keep coming roughly every 10 minutes. Over the long run, hashrate has grown a lot, which is why older machines earn less each year.

3. Block reward

The reward is cut in half every 210,000 blocks. A halving instantly halves the new BTC a miner earns. Plan for it, especially if you are buying hardware. The halving countdown shows when the next one is due.

4. Electricity

For most miners electricity is the biggest ongoing cost. A machine using 3,500 watts runs through 84 kWh a day. At 0.05 dollars per kWh that is 4.20 dollars, at 0.20 dollars it is 16.80 dollars. The same machine can be profitable in one place and lose money in another.

5. Efficiency

Efficiency is measured in joules per terahash (J/TH): how much energy the machine uses for each unit of work. Newer machines are much more efficient, which is why they stay profitable longer.

6. BTC price

Rewards are in BTC but costs are in local money. A higher BTC price increases income without changing costs.

Run your own numbers

The Bitcoin mining calculator fills in the live network hashrate and BTC price. Enter your machine's hashrate, power use and your electricity price to see daily and monthly profit. Remember to also consider the cost of the hardware, cooling, and how long the machine will stay competitive.
